A classic Sun-E-Land bike was island hopping on a Lopez Island bike packing trip. With camping gear and a child in the trailer, this Sun-E-Land bike conquered the initial uphill facing all bikers getting off the ferry. This butter-yellow, original cruiser easily assisted Mark up the ascent and smoothly down the other side to Odlin State Park. The weekend was filled with exciting events like a northwest thunder storm, bioluminescence, orca sightings and a voyage across the San Juan Islands.

This month marks the decades long tradition of Bellingham and Whatcom County’s most popular bike ride. The Tour De Whatcom kicks of in a couple of weeks on July 19 from Boundary Bay Brewing and ends there after your choice of biking distance. Rides are offered in 22, 44 and 66 mile routes around the beautiful scenes and countryside of Whatcom County.

Last year, my friend Steven Collins, my son Harvey and I all went on this ride together. It was my first time completing the tour and we did it all on our Sun-E-Land E-bikes. While riders have the choice to ride manual or e-bikes, all riders are welcomed and encouraged however they feel most comfortable to participate. If you are in the mood for a great biking experience, this is one of the best ways to see and be a part of the PNW biking community.

Welcome back to another summer in Bellingham, WA! This is our favorite time of year as the weather is perfect for biking and getting back outdoors. Sun-E-Land Bikes is open daily starting June 17 through Labor Day and open every weekend until the end of October. Some exciting news at Sun-E-Land Bikes are that we are new a dealer and demo site for several different E-bike companies. We stock and demo both Aventon and Lectric E-bikes for people to rent, test and buy. We have the lowest marks on E-bikes in the PNW. We want to make biking afforable and accessible to everyone.

Another exciting event that happened this spring is the opening of the new pier and boardwalk on the north end of Bellingham. It is just a 20 minute ride to new pier that has beuatiful views of the Bellingham waterfront along with sights of the North Cascade mountain range just over the foothills of Whatcom County. The boardwalk is nearly a quater-mile long and lit up for evening and night walking. It is accessible from Squalicum Park and we can point you in the right direction from the shop.

Bellingham’s Little Squalicum Pier Opening Recalls Era of Long Waterfront Piers

This summer, Sun-E-Land Bikes teamed up with the Bellingham Tourist Bureau and Hotel Scoop writer Carolyn Heller to show some of the sights, sounds and natural beauty of Bellingham, WA. Carolyn is from Vancouver, BC and has traveled and written about different hotels, restaurants and  points of interest of cities around the world.

This summer, Sun-E-Land Bikes was chosen to give her a 2 hour bike tour of the parks and trails and some of the history of Bellingham, Fairhaven and WWU as well as the downtown area. We were excited that several members of the Bellingham Tourism Bureau were able to join us on our ride as we cruised along the waterfront on a beautiful September afternoon.

Our ride started from the Portal Container Village and cruised along the water to Boulevard Park. From there, we rolled down the South Bay Trail to Fairhaven for views of Lummi Island and the Gulf Islands in the distance. After a short break at Marine Park, we traveled up to Western Washington University. WWU has an extensive outdoor sculpture collection as well as views of downtown Bellingham, the Canadian Rockies and San Juan Islands.

As we explored, the 200 acre campus, Carolyn took notes of artwork, newly constructed buildings and thousands of bricks laid out to create the gathering area at WWU known as Red Square. During the summer and school year, many performances, rallies and festivals take place on campus right here in heart of the campus.

Our last leg of the tour took us from campus through Downtown Bellingham along the newly implemented bike lanes that safely help vehicles and bikers navigate the intersections. On this beautiful afternoon, the shops were filled with pedestrians and the weather was a perfect 68 degrees. At the end of downtown, we headed south back into the Portal Container Village to complete the trip. As we parked out bikes in front of the shop, we had to decide weather we wanted to celebrate our ride with beers from Kulshan Brewing or ice cream from the Selkie Scoop. Tough choices to make after another amazing ride!

Biking on Lummi Island:

Sun-E-Land Bikes, located in Bellingham WA, is a beautiful town city located between the mountains and the sea. Locals and visitors here love our biking and outdoor recreation. An adventurous trip one of our e-bike renters just embarked upon was from our shop downtown,   12 miles along Bellingham Bay, on the ferry, around Lummi Island and back. This epic day trip last Leslie roughly 8 hours and covered 30 miles.

While not all riders may want a full day trip, there are other options for experiencing Lummi Island on two wheels. Lummi is a peaceful place with a couple of cafes and activities scattered around the island. With the slower pace, biking is the right choice for a visit. While there are many amazing things to do in Bellingham year-round, experiencing Bellingham on a bike or e-bike tops the chart. With our ideal location on the waterfront, Sun-E-Land Bikes shop is located on the bike pump-track and starting point of miles of trails.

A visit to The Portal is a must do for all visitors to Bellingham. The Port of Bellingham continues to add attractions to the site which hosts festivals, live music, restaurants, food trucks, a beer garden and wine bars as well as family favorites of mini-golf and ice cream. In the midst of all this, there is a enormous pump-track for bikers to ride. The track features various terrain for all ages and skill levels as well as bikes to rent at our shop for visitors from out-of-town. We have to give a huge thanks to the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition for all work they do to promote biking in the PNW.

The official opening day for The Portal is May 3, 2024. The Port of Bellingham continues to open new businesses and facilities around the pump-track and waterfront for locals and visitors to enjoy. Along with Sun-E-Land Bikes, the Portal also has the Trackside Beer Garden, DISH Cafe, Selkie Scoop for ice cream as well as a new wine bar (Bin 39) and Pizzeria (Zeeks).

In addition to the regular businesses and activities happening in Bellingham, May is Bike month in the City of Subdued Excitement. May 5 features the city bike parade with other bike related events occuring all month culminating with May 17 Bike to work and school day.
